To knit or not to knit?

Later this week, I'm taking a trip to Washington, DC with two members of my company's senior management team, including my boss.  Ever since a near death experience (my husband has tried and tried to convince me this is an exaggeration, but I maintain that it was in fact life-threatening) on a flight a couple of years ago I've been a bit of a nervous flyer.  Knitting is one of the few things that I can do during the taxi and take-off that seems to prevent a mild panic attack.  I always leave my knitting at home when I travel for business, though.  You never see female business travelers knitting.  I've thought about why this is and finally decided that women professionals are often hesitant to confirm stereotypes to male superiors or coworkers (or even complete strangers) by doing things that are domestic or stereotypically female.  Do you think this is just paranoia on the part of women or is there any truth to it?  What does it matter if women who are professional do things that are girly?  We are girls after all!  Do I even care?  That certainly turned out deeper and more philosophical than I intended.  For now, I'm planning on packing the Kava Kava, the noise-cancelling headphones, the Wall Street Journal AND the knitting needles.

This is such a great topic. I'm with you that it is tricky to decide when to keep up an "image" and when to say that stereotypes are not something that should confine you one way or the other. You take those knitting needles!
